Welcome to Miss Ison's Class

The adults in class 6 are;

Miss Ison, Mr Moore and Miss Rawlins

Term 3

During this summer term, our topic is the Stone Age and our essential question is,

How would I survive in the Stone Age?

This term, our PE is swimming, which is on Tuesdays.

Welcome to our cave! Come warm yourself by our fire. Or cook yourself some stew...

 Term 2

Welcome back, we hope that you all had a lovely Christmas!

We begin 2018 with the Victorians! Our essential question is “Where would we be without the Victorians?”

In literacy this term we will be looking at Oliver Twist and building up to writing our own play script to create a scene from the book, we will also be writing newspaper reports, writing stories, diary entries and poetry. All of our Literacy work will be linked to the Victorians and will cross over with topic and history throughout the term.

This term in Maths we will be continuing to work on our arithmetic skills looking at the written methods for all four operations as well as looking at measure, geometry and reasoning. We aim to link as many Maths sessions as possible to the Victorians and will be using chalkboards to make jottings and show working out to keep this in theme with the Victorians.

The Victorians is a fantastic topic to cover as it lends itself to so many projects. In History we will be looking at the reign of Queen Victoria and the key events during the Victorian era.

In Geography we will be looking at maps and photos of Lincoln from the present day and compare them with maps and photographs of the same area from the Victorian era to look at similarities and differences.

In Art we will be looking at William Morris a Victorian artist who worked using patterns, this will link to our final topic outcome by providing the aesthetics for the packaging or design on our toys.

In Science we will be looking at circuits and how we can create circuits using different materials to create switches and lights. This will also link to our final outcome.

Our final outcome will incorporate all of our learning throughout this term and our final product will be to create either a rocking horse or a train made out of wood, which will have a leaver/pulley, and a light built in it. The children will be responsible for designing their toy working from success criteria. The children will also need to write a simple list of instructions so that another child could build the toy. Using the patterns within the toy or in the packaging will incorporate the artwork that we have looked at.

This term PE will be every Tuesday and therefore a PE kit will need to be in school for this day. We will be looking at catching and throwing skills along with some racket skills.

Our trip this term will be to the Southwell workhouse where the children will be able to experience a typical Victorian day.

This term will be sent out every Thursday and will be due back in on the following Tuesday. To encourage the children to complete their homework we will be running at reward chart in class. Homework will consist of that week’s spellings, reading, maths Sumdog and a challenge linked to our topic.

Keep checking in to see our updates and find out what we have been doing!

Term 1

This term our topic is the Frozen Planet and our essential question is "Do you have what it takes to explore the frozen planet?". We have started our topic off by designing and making Igloo's out of sugar cubes! These have been great fun to make and have really challenged the children {and the adult's} design ideas and improved their hand to eye coordination.

Science forms a large part of our topic and we will be beginning to carry out various scientific investigations this term starting with our Iceberg investigation, this saw us using two manmade large icebergs placed in two bowl. One bowl had fresh waster in and the other had salt water, as a class we had to predict which one would melt first and predict what would happen to the water levels when it did melt. This was great fun for all involved. We also try to do a few fun experiments throughout the week including the coke and mento challenge, the raisins dancing in the lemonade and the alkasalza and white vinegar in the film pots!

Our Art project this term has been the Northern Lights and the children have created some fantastic pictures using a wide range of mediums.

Our class received an important voice recording on Monday 11th September from a Scientist based at the Rothera research station on Antarctica, asking us to write some adventure stories based on a polar expedition. Our adventure stories are fantastic and Mrs Hagues emailed them off to the research station who very kindly sent us a personalised message back highlighting the key areas they enjoyed from our stories. We have since worked on poetry, persuasive letters and soon we will be writing our very own non-chronological reports!

In Numeracy we are working on developing the written methods for multiplication and divide, we have also been practicing our mental maths by playing a range of games including interactive games to beat the clock!

Our homework will be sent home every Thursday in our homework books and will be due in the following Tuesday. We use the sumdog app for our maths and the link for this and the user names and passwords are all typed on the homework sheets. We also have a reading expectation to read a minimum of three times a week to an adult or to ourselves. The weekly spellings are also on the homework swell as a homework challenge each week.

In PE this term we have been working on our gymnastics skills such as our balance, fitness and Core strength skills. Our final aim is to use the skills we have practised to choreograph a gymnastics routine to show to some other adults in school.

Our PE sessions are every Tuesday morning this term so please remember your PE kits.
